The Grass Element In Creating A Garden

September 7, 2009 · Filed Under Home improvement · Comment

The third element of planning a garden is the grass and how closely it is correlated with the other planning factors. In small gardens it is best to confine the grass to a single area, though circumstances may arise to make it desirable to stay away from this rule. In such an event, the second grass space should be secondary to the principal one, and if possible reserved for a separate purpose.

To bisect the garden into two equal areas of grass is at once to introduce symmetry. The artist well knows how fatal it is to a good symbolic effect to allot equal spaces to sky and landscape, the two cases are parallel.

The idea of a lawn for games is rarely realizable for want of space, and the grass plot therefore, should be treated with other purposes in view. Its functions are more closely related to the flowers and general picture. It affords welcome relief to the eye, and by contrast enhances the value of the color effect obtainable with the flowers.

Moreover, its surface presents a cool, soft, and welcome tread, and a place to laze upon and enjoy the garden view. If you already have a nice collection of outdoor statuary, a wall water fountain or garden water feature can add to the vista.

It is that part of the garden in which we may plant a few trees for shade, without fear that their shadows and hungry roots will work havoc with the flowers. The grass plot should never be isolated by surrounding it on all sides with gravel, which is done too often in gardens. Let one or more of the sides join a border, where grass and flowers would come into combination. You can even let the border thrust out an extension into the grass.

Beware of fretting your principal grass plot into a thing of ragged outline by overdoing this procedure, and do not pierce it with a multitude of little beds. Remember, the simpler in shape your grass plot, the less difficulty you will experience in mowing it and keeping it trim and neat.

Beds in grass are best grouped at one or two points, and the components of the group should be shaped so as to produce unity of effect. By doing this you are able to introduce garden statuary, patio statuary, or even something like an old world wall fountains without straying away parallel garden. It is generally better that the outlines of the group should preserve a parallelism with those of the grass plot, as this ensures a more harmonious effect.

It is clear that the gardener should arrange, as far as possible, that the principal shadows in his garden should fall upon the grass, where they will be welcome to shade, and by planting them with bulbs, it will secure a charming feature in spring and early summer. Another plan is to utilize the space for a sunken rock garden, and yet another is to make a central group of beds upon it, which in the case of a square space becomes an attractive secondary focus.

An important point is to give proper access to all grass spaces. This implies that the borders should not mess with the most natural way of reaching the grass. Neglect of this consideration may tempt those who use the garden to skip over the borders, with consequences to the plants which do not need to be stated explicitly.

It is good to provide means of access to the grass at all points from which it is likely to be approached, by bringing it up to the path at those points. This is done by restraining the border by approximately three or four feet at its end, or by breaking through it at some point in its length.

When a grass plot is used solely as a background for a group of beds, there should be a wide border at the edges. Whatever the shape of the beds, the spaces between the two beds should have a sufficient width to ensure no difficulty in mowing.

In dealing with grass spaces of irregular outline, such as those where the paths are winding, you should take into account the outline of the grass space when placing the beds. For instance, a square group of beds set in a curved promontory would produce a discordant note.

It is better to adapt the shape of the group to the space in which it is set. If you decide not to do this, it would become difficult to install garden statues, large fountains, or anything else related to outdoor statuary.

There is no need to make the grass level if the ground has a natural slope. On the contrary, sloping ground greatly assists drainage, and ensures that puddles shall not lodge on the surface, which, would inevitably occur on a flat area.

Enhance the Looks of Your Yard with Garden Art

September 7, 2009 · Filed Under Home improvement · Comment

The summer season is far to short in many parts of the country, and many of us who have our own homes or who are fortunate enough to have a bit of lawn to call our own, love to spend time in the yard making it look great. We spend countless hours mowing the grass, trimming away the weeds and planting bushes, shrubs and flowers in order for our yard to look its best.

A well cared for yard looks wonderful. The beautiful flowers that are planted along the fence line look outstanding and the lawn is well groomed, but something still seems to be missing. What more can you do to make your yard look even more cozy and inviting? Why not consider decorating your yard a bit by adding a few colorful garden stakes to the small herb garden you have planted there in the corner? Garden stakes are available in a wide variety of sizes, styles and colors and are the perfect way to add a bit of whimsy to your home and garden. Garden stakes can also be used indoors to spruce up a houseplant or can also be ideal for giving new life to your balcony or patio. You can find garden stakes that are full of color, fun and motion.

Another charming decoration for yard are lawn ornaments. Again, lawn ornaments like garden stakes come in a wide array of sizes, shapes, colors and are made out of wood, metal, clay, or plastic. Lawn ornaments can come in human form, animal form, as fountains, bird baths, bird houses and garden gnomes to name a few. You can easily express yourself by choosing a lawn ornament that tells visitors what you are all about. Perhaps you collect turtle figurines. Then adding a few turtle-inspired  lawn ornaments and placing them around your yard is a great way to expand your collection and surround yourself with what you love.

We all love our yards and gardens and there is no better way to add a bit of charm to the  utside of the house than by adding some garden art to the mix. Nearly every well kept and  nice garden includes some form of garden art, be it a fountain, a pink flamingo or a few spinning garden stakes lining the walkway. It’s fun, it’s delightful and best of all it does not have to cost an arm and an leg to decorate your yard.

Planning a Garden Revamp

September 7, 2009 · Filed Under Home improvement · Comment

When planning a new look to your garden it is important to think hard before you start. Sometimes we see gardens on the television or get ideas form other people and think that they would work well in our garden and are then disappointed when they do not look right or work how they had imagined in their own garden.

There are some things that it is worth thinking about before you start. Firstly the location of your garden with regards to sun and shade and the soil type will determine the position of garden furniture and the types of plants which will thrive there. It is important to find out about plants before you buy them so that you know whether they will grow well in your soil. It is not just the acidity or alkalinity that are important but also whether the soil is sandy or clay and whether it is well drained or boggy. If you soil is not good for the plants that you want to grow then maybe instead of landscape edging you could have some raised gardens which have the correct compost in for the plant types that you are interested in growing. These could also save you a lot of bending when you are weeding and maintaining the garden and so they could be especially helpful for older people. It is a good idea to think about the future and how well you will maintain the garden in later life.

It is also worth thinking about your own lifestyle and whether the garden that you like the look of will fit into that. Think about how much maintenance there is and whether you have the time to do that work all of the time. If you want the garden to look nice all of the time, you will need to work in there a lot, weeding, pruning and cutting grass if you choose to have grass and flower beds. It is worth thinking about using bark chippings or stones to cover the soil to try to prevent the weeds from growing through. It can also make things look very pretty as well. You can buy certain grasses which do not grow as quickly as others and this can be a good way to stop you having to mow the lawn as often. You also need to think about how the garden will look after a while. Will the slabs, decking and other features discolour with the weather and if they do, what effect will that have on the look of the garden. Is there anything that you can do to prevent it.

Also you need to think about all of the family members and whether they are catered for in the garden. If you have children, for example, you need to think about where they will play. It is no good having no where or just a few sandboxes as they are likely to mess around in the smart bits of the garden and may spoil it. So think hard when you are planning.

The Tile Shower Pan Curb — 3 Tips For Getting Started Right

August 17, 2009 · Filed Under Home improvement · Comment

A tile shower pan curb is there to keep the water in and not out of the shower.  Faulty construction means that often the curb is the cause of a shower pan failure.  You can build the curb several ways, but some parts have to be right.  Here are three key parts that must be right to keep the shower working properly.

Tip 1:  Use wood, but not hollow or wet.

The frame of the curb can be made of poured concrete, bricks or wood.  Wood is often the choice.  Don’t make the mistake of framing the curb as a hollow construction.  That’s often why showers fail.  The frame may shift or move and then it’s cracked tiles and disaster.  It’s easier and better to just stack 2 x 4’s to the height you need.  Don’t use wet pressure treated lumber either for the same reason.  The drying lumber will shift and cause tile cracking.

Tip 2:  Slope the curb.

One trick you may miss is sloping the curb.  The curb top should slope in to make sure the water moves into the shower.  You can build the slope into the final mortar layer if you wish.  It helps though to slope the frame too.  That’s easy enough to do if you shim the stacked wood pieces used to construct the curb.

Tip 3: Tie it all together.

A frame that stays in place is one key to a lasting curb.  Stacked wood pieces should be nailed or screwed together.  Also attach the curb pieces to the frame at the ends of the curb too.  Another good step is to glue the bottom curb section to the subfloor.  Also use galvanized fasteners everywhere.  Expect the curb you build to last a very long time.

Getting a tile shower pan curb framed properly is one step to a problem free curb and a long-lasting shower.  After the framing you’ll be installing the liner membrane over the curb and then coating with mortar.  Use the right material and tie it all together well and it’s there to stay.

Helpful Garage Storage Ideas

August 16, 2009 · Filed Under Home improvement · Comment

Garage storage is one of those spaces which is oftentimes troublesome to coordinate. What ought you stash away in the garage? What ought you not stash away in the garage? What is the method you understand when you are trying to put in too much in the garage? How can you find complete garage storage ideas? Your garage does not need to be a problematic site to get organized. You just may want a little help.

Understanding what you should not store in a garage is just as essential as understanding what you ought stack away in one. Garages lean to being dirty, hot sites so you have to keep that in your brain before you put anything out there. While stashing away lawn and garden tools out there is okay, you in all probability do not want to stash away good linens or anything of sentimental value in that location. It will most likely get grimey and creatures may get into it and destroy it. It is also important not to store anything in your garage which would get ruined by being too hot or too cold. Any odd paint and other chemicals cannot be stored above or below a particular temperature. Preserve that in your mind with your garage storage ideas.

So what should go in your garage? It is optimal to keep items which are not troubled by temperature extremes or dirt in the garage. Lawn equipment, tools, garden equipment, some types of outdoor chemical substances. Merely be sure to check the labels of those chemicals so you know whether or not they are troubled by temperature extreme points. If you believe some effective garage storage ideas are stacking away your holiday ornamentations or holiday dishes out there, truly think about what you possess in those boxes. If any of it could become broken by warmth, grime or animals, you might need to reconsider it. If they are well covered in well sealed plastic containers, you could trouble yourself less about dirt or beasts. But do think of what you are stacking away in your garage before you set it in there.

Be aware of setting too many items in your garage. It should not be storage from floor to ceiling unless you do not require to stack away your autos in there. If you discover yourself positioning lots of items in your garage, stop and ask yourself what is in each of those packages, why you need what is in those packages and what you are going to employ it for. All things ought to have a use. It should not be “at some point I will use this” but preferably “I will utilize this throughout the summer.” Do not store things merely to stash away them. We each possess items which we preserve for emotional reasons but perhaps it would be stronger to take a picture of that item and then just let it go.

Having an organised garage does not have to be challenging. Just think about what should be in that location and what should not. These user-friendly garage storage ideas might get your garage in shape in no time. Additional ideas at http://www.yourhomeisorganized.com/GarageOrganization.htm

Home Solar Power Systems – Secrets Revealed Home Solar Energy

August 16, 2009 · Filed Under Home improvement · Comment

Eliminate your dependency from the power company and generate your own solar electricity from the suns energy.

Making a small solar panel or large solar panels for a home power energy system will save you money, save the environment, reduce toxin carbon gases and power your house with free solar electricity.

By using the sun’s energy to harness electricity for your house, you are also helping to protect the environment with the cost of living skyrocketing and fuel prices near record highs any savings for the family budget is welcome.

The perfect solution for you is learning exactly how to generate this power and reduce your bill. Do you know that when you build your own home solar power systems, it can be a great way to reduce your huge monthly electrical bills by half as well as allowing you to help the environment because it is environmentally friendly?

You should give some serious thought to building your own home solar system by making solar panels creating your own green solar electricity from renewable energy as an alternative to fossil fuels.

Solar energy is renewable and converting it releases no toxic emissions into our environment. The energy from sun has already been researched and studied by scientist for many years. Solar panels sold by the retailers cost thousands of dollars when you can simply make your own solar panels for less than your last electricity bill.

You will be amazed at how simple and easy the whole home power system is to set up. You can find great detail to explain where and how to source the materials and most important where you can pick up deep cycle batteries to use in your solar system sometimes for free or very cheap from the internet or purchase one of the many how to make guides.

You will see tremendous benefits when you start to adopt your very own solar power systems to power your home appliances. You soon will see your energy bills reduced by at least 80 percent almost the moment you put your solar power systems to use, not to mention that this is a renewable and sustainable source of energy throughout its lifespan.

The greatest demand for power is between 4pm through to 7pm when dinner cooking and water heating is at its premium. It’s the time when solar panels are not producing any or very little power. This is when you ask yourself whether to go completely off the grid or stay connected.

Are you curious to know about solar power systems and how they can save you money?

During the day the solar panels produce the electricity that runs the house when the demand load is small and if your power system is larger than the electricity you are using, you then put power back into the grid earning you power credits that come off your power bill.

Hence the saving staying connected to the grid. The whole process of building a complete home solar system with solar panels is very easy to understand and you require absolutely no knowledge about power engineering to make solar panels for the home power systems but a qualified tradesperson is required by state laws to connect into the house power and meter switchboards.

It is also possible to “sell back” power into the grid. Imagine that, you receive money from electric companies! Many people are looking for ways to save money on their electric bills and one way is to build their own solar power systems.

DIY power solar power systems are becoming popular and the good thing about solar power is that it is one of the most readily available energy sources known to man today.

Your electric bill will become non-existence. Let’s face it some commercial solar or wind power system can easily cost you in excess of $15,000 and compare that to a do it yourself power system and you will realize that you can avoid expensive solar systems and setup costs, and enjoy savings hundreds of dollars in power bills each year.

By acting today, the power system and solar panels will pay for itself in 3 or 4 months. Solar power systems Can be built with easier obtainable materials that can be found at any local hardware store.

With today’s technology and materials costing less, there is an increasing demand for information on how to build solar power systems for home uses. You can build your own solar panel for less than $200 with a do-it-yourself installation guide.

Follow the instructions in one of these guides, and you can save money on your electrical bills!
