Who Else Wants To Try Out A Pro Lawn Mower On A Big Lawn?

Filed Under (How To, Landscaping, Lawns) by Robin on 30-07-2008

Ever wonder what it’s like to use some of the pro lawnmowers?  Well, anywhere there is a large lawn that is what usually get’s used so that it can be done faster and better.  These machines take some practice to get good at.

They are powerful and cost a lot more than the homeowner mower that you may have at home but this is what is needed to keep the big lawns looking good.  As you’ll see in this video, they are a lot harder to use than most of us think they would be at first.

Let’s Be Frank - Lawn Mowing

Fairfield U. sophomore Frank Romano teams up with the grounds crew to give you an in-depth look at mowing the lawns on campus.

Gutter Cleaning By Hand

Filed Under (Exterior maintenance, Gutters, Home improvement) by Robin on 15-07-2008

Gutter cleaning is one of those things that needs to be done at least once a year and quite likely even more than that depending on the are that you live in.  If you have trees with leaves or needles on then you can expect to clean them a number of times throughout the year to keep the water flowing through the gutters and down the downspouts.

Let’s be frank about this.  It is not a fun or glorious job but it is one of those things that has to get down.  There are many methods to get them clean but I have found that the only way to really get them cleaned out not cause more mess on the outside of your home on the ground below is to just get up to the eaves either on the ladder or walking along the roof (if it is not too steep) and clean out the debris by hand and or with a scoop as you see below.  You’ll be amazed at what you’ll find in there.

I’ve found everything from leaves, twigs, rocks, candy wrappers and nails in there.  So, wear gloves and be very careful on the ladder.  Safety is your first and most important concern.

Enjoy the video.

Lawn mowers and lawn tractors are great machines and the latest models have some features worth checking out. New, fancy zero turn mowers and four wheel steer mowers can make mowing your lawn quicker and easier. Tim Carter takes you through some of those new lawn mower features.

In this video, Patti Moreno reveals some options for your yard instead of just lawns.  Transforming your yard from lawns to flower beds, shrubs and trees can be so much nicer to enjoy and better for the environment with less use of fertilizers, pesticides and fuel for those lawn mowers, trimmers and blowers.

There is a lot of great info in this short video.  Hope you enjoy.

How to get savvy with gardening?

reader.erin asked:

Every time I buy a houseplant or look something up that’s related to any kind of gardening I get completely lost in all the terminology, latin names, etc.

I’d like to get better at gardening and growing things without having to get my degree in horticulture. Are there any sources (websites/books) for beginners who don’t understand all the “big words” ?
