Making Solar Panels

Making your own solar panels is something that sounds tough but really is pretty trivial, assuming that you have some good directions and a little patience.

You will need a few items:

  • Solar Cells.  These are available off of eBay for less than one dollar a piece.  Your DIY Solar Panels will likely need more than a few of these so it’s best to figure out what you want to power first.
  • Solar Panels.  These are the meat and potatoes of your project.  A solar panel is nothing more than a bunch of solar cells thrown together.  If you know how to build a simple table, this will be cake for you.

The solar cells are the guys that will be doing all of the work for you.  They will actually be doing the job of converting the light from our sun to energy which you can use.  Pretty awesome for something that you can buy off of ebay for less than the cost of a donut!

Photovoltaics is the field of study which contains the science behind solar cells.  Definitely google or bing this, it’s some pretty intertesting reading.  You’ll want to learn about this, it’s one of the reasons you’re building your own solar panel in the first place!

So now that you have all of these items what do you do?  Simple, read.  This is the type of thing that any upfront study that you do will be paid back twofold when you go ahead and do your solar project.  I was cocky and tried to jump in when I frist received the material but this was a huge mistake.  I took a step back, read some stuff, mapped out what I wanted to do, took my time, and got a result that I could be proud of my first time.  I made my own solar panel!

Electrical Receptacle Box

June 8, 2009 · Filed Under Home improvement · Comment

Very few of us pay attention to them anymore, despite the fact that we are woefully dependent on them in order to properly function on a daily basis.  We are at a certain point in our technological advancement that we can pretty much be paralyzed by a single power outage – electricity has evidently become our silent god.  Of course, this god’s equally silent prophets would have to be the receptacle boxes or receptacle outlets – otherwise known as the wall sockets.  Without these to receive the plugs of our electronic appliances and gadgets, we would not be able to get on our computers, turn on our lamps, or watch the television for news that we would need.

Many of the things that are important to us are brought to us by electricity, and because electricity can be so powerful, it is imperative that something moderates our frequent interactions with it.  This is precisely what receptacle boxes are for – they effectively regulate the amount of electricity that goes into an appliance or gadget via the plug so that it will not have to handle excess electricity.  In order for this to be so, the wiring within the receptacle box must be done well, must be done exactly right.  Otherwise, the receptacle box will not function well, and the appliances will either get too little or too much electricity.  The former is merely frustrating of course, but the latter can be potentially fatal.

Knowing this, we should be able to treat the receptacle boxes with a little more respect; sure, we’re not expected to pay attention to them all the time, but we should at least try to remember that without them, we’ll probably not be able to enjoy the things we enjoy today.
