Low-cost Solar Energy For Your Outback Cabin

July 22, 2009 · Filed Under Home improvement · Comment

Do you have a backwoods bungalow or cabin which you have trouble acquiring access to power? Get affordable solar energy for your inaccessible cabin or cottage by capitalising inexhaustible energy and go independent. Discover how to construct your own personal do-it-yourself solar panel for under $200 or your own do-it-yourself wind generator for below $100 and live off-the-grid.

On that point, there are numerous rewards of inexhaustible energy. Solar energy and wind generation are typically exceedingly dependable, and can generate electrical power endlessly for numerous 1000s of hours with small or no upkeep. You will not have to care about electric company ‘hook-up fees’ or a power bill every month. This is important for folks who only once in a while rest at their cabin.

A domestic solar energy system will give major power during the daytime (even on cloud-covered days), although the household wind generation system will exclusively return power whenever the wind is blowing. These systems compliment one another, compensating for each others failings. You are able to then optionally store the electrical energy in a deep-cycle battery power system for upcoming usage.

I highly advocate implementing affordable solar energy for your remote cabin or bungalow and getting off-the-grid. You will never have to care whenever the power goes out for a long time or paying a power bill ever again. Working off-grid can be done for individual causes or to bring down the environmental affect of day-after-day living. There are a good deal of guidebooks out there that instruct you how to produce you personal solar energy or wind power.

Tips on Reducing your Electricity Bill

July 21, 2009 · Filed Under Home improvement · Comment

The first step is the easiest step to reduce your electric bill and the most commonly heard: Turn off the lights! It’s true, households who keep the lights off during the day and when not at home end up saving a lot more per month. Times those savings by twelve and you’ve earned back a pretty penny! That’s a lot of savings just for being careful and making sure to hit that switch when you step out. Likewise if you live in a home with a lot of windows and the sun happens to be out do you really need to have the lights on? In terms of lighting, another way to save is to use greener light bulbs which use up less of a charge and therefore save you even more!

Another thing that really racks up the bill, most likely during a sweltering summer is air conditioning. People tend to just leave their air conditioner on all the time, even when they aren’t home! It’s definitely a good feeling to come back into a cool house from a long day of work during a hot day, but the reality is that you don’t need to leave your air conditioner running all day. Just turn it on right as you get home and save yourself some money and reduce your electric bill.

Power hogging electronics also add to the bill. Culprits include plasma TV’s, game systems and computers. One thing to do is to have a lot of your heavy duty power hogging electronics connected to a safe and heavy duty surge protector. That way you can shut them all off at once when you are done and not draw any more unnecessary electricity. Most people would be surprised to know that if they simply just unplugged their electronics instead of just turning them off onto standby mode that they would actually save some money and help towards our environment.

Like anything else that you can do monthly to reduce your electric bill, all the savings from these separate methods will add up to give you a nice chunk of money that will multiply by twelve times over a year. For large families in large homes whose bills are pretty expensive, this can mean a huge difference! For young adults in their first two room apartment, this maybe not so much of a change. But hey, even they can take the initiative too, if for anything just to draw less power and be greener towards our emissions will help to reduce your electric bill.

Greenhouses hygiene tips

July 21, 2009 · Filed Under Home improvement · Comment

When growing vegetable crops under glass, cleanliness is of the utmost importance. Each fear, when the tomato crop is cleared in autumn, inspect the house for broken glass so that it may be replaced before the winter. It will not be possible to adequately heat a greenhouse where the warns air is continually escaping through damaged glass or where the ventilators will not close properly. Nor is it possible to fumigate efficiently for the control of pest and disease. It is usual at this time to wash the glass with warm soapy water, both inside and outside for dirty glass will prevent the sun’s rays from penetrating and this is also the case with frame lights.

As a precaution against pest and disease, fumigation most also be carried out A simple and effective method is to burn sulphur cones or candles inside the house, either before or after the crop has been removed but sulphur should not be used where there are growing plants.

To fumigate, close up all ventilators and if the greenhouse is of some size, begin by lighting the cones or candles at the nu- end, and working towards the door. Sulphur fumes are irritating and must not be inhaled. Sulphur should be used at the rate of 1 pound for every woo cubic feet of air space.

As an alternative, wash down the inside and soak the soil. It is a clear liquid and should be applied with a power sprayer which will enable the liquid to penetrate all cracks of the woodwork and into the glass overlaps where pests usually congregate. The discovery that formaldehyde gas, released from formalin solution, would cure mushroom house sickness and make a greenhouse ’sweet’ and clean after tomato and cucumbers, revolutionized the growing of these crops for commercial growers.

After formalin has been used 4 to 5 weeks should he allowed before new planting is done in the soil beds. The fumes given off are poisonous to plants, humans and animals and after fumigating the house, allow the gas 24 hours to achieve its maximum penetration before opening up the door and ventilators. The house should then be aired for 4$ hours to allow time for the tinnes to clear, before being worked in again.

When the house has been fumigated, an additional precaution may be taken by passing the flame of a blow lamp over the woodwork, whilst all seed boxes and pots should be sterilised by ins mersing them in a tank of formalin solution, diluted tot part m 5o of water. Or use Ster-Izal which may also be used for disinfecting the greenhouse and soil.

Should eelworin have been troublesome as it may be with tomatoes, the pest is eradicated by injecting the soil with the liquid fumigant D.I). It will be necessary to allow the soil a month for the fumes to escape before further planting is done. The greenhouse may be kept free from pests by the use of an aerosol which is a suspension of minute solids or liquid particles in gaseous fors ii, thereby creating a mist which envelopes each plant. The aerosol will consist ola metal container with a thermostatically controlled heating element to vaporise the liquid pesticide. The Mistosol 99 is suitable for the larger house. It is worked by a high speed motor of one-eighth h.p. which develops 16,ocx.) r.p.m., the spinning disc system enabling an excellent mist to be produced from the water based insecticides or disinfectants.

A more simple method is to fit a disc impregnated with pesticide (or liingicide) over an electric light bulb which when switched on, will release the fumigant with the heat of the bulb.

One of the earliest preparations to be used in aerosol form was Azobenzene, discovered by Prof. Blauvelt ol(ornell University: it will eliminate red spider from glasshouses.

Where raising ones own plants, it will be advisable to have a supply of sterilized soil always available. One method is to obtain loam ofa fibrous nature and to water it with fornialin solution or with Sterilite soil disinfecting fluid, used at a strength of 1 pint to to gallons of water. As the soil is made damp, make it into a heap 2-3 feet high and cover with a tarpaulin or plastic sheeting to retain the tunics. Leave for a week, then remove the cover to allow the soil to be turned for the fumes to escape. It should be turned several more times until quite free of any fumes. This will take about a month when it may be used.

The Autosoil electric soil steriliser is most effective. It will sterilise a bushel of soil at one time and is automatically controlled, switching off after sterilisation is complete. Steam sterilisation may be done with the Sterilatum, a machine whereby steam is driven through soil contained in a chamber, a useful method where larger quantities of soil are to be sterilised. It should be stated that soil will be sterilised in a temperature of 0o ‘F. (7CC.) held for 4 hours. It is inadvisable for the temperature to exceed [ 76′F. (80°C.) and should it exceed 212°F. (100′C.). the soil will be made completely sterile and unable to support any form of plant life.
